Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) | The quote is attributed to Voltaire, but was probably penned by Evelyn Beatrice Hall (pseudonym Stephen G. Tallentyre), who used it in her book The Friends of Voltaire (1906, archive.org) to characterize Voltaire's attitude towards Claude Adrien Helvétius.
